This thread has been dyed with oak galls and iron, an ancient and widespread recipe. Our oak galls for this batch are imported from Turkey and are appropriate for Europe and West and Central Asia, and possibly North Africa as well. (A different species of oak gall was used in East Asia. European colonists around the globe may have also imported prized Turkish galls, but probably used native varieties of oak gall.)
This type of gray is widespread throughout history and geography and is generally appropriate for jjust about any time prior to the advent of synthetic dyes, except for certain locales that occasionally outlawed it in favor of indigotin + madder + yellow dye plant recipes. .
This 2-ply thread can be used for to work various types of embroidery (plies NOT separable as with DMC or similar!), weaving narrow goods, eg, tablet weaving, or tapestry, at approx. 30 ends per inch, and also for braiding techniques such as fingerloop or lucet, and other historical and modern fiber arts.
The Golden Schelle is on hiatus in order to focus on finishing up our last few commissions and then completely revamp our inventory and website. We are closed to new orders at this time.
