Viking Age bead festoons were designed to hang from the front brooches that hold together the straps of their hangerok or apron-dress of feminine Norse garb of the Viking Age. These are displayed on the chest rather than around the neck, essentially. You can wear it this way, or use the S-hook to wear it as a necklace.
Some beads are what I call accidental replicas-- mass produced lampwork beads that weren't trying to reproduce Viking Age beads but have very nearly done it anyway. A few are more peri-oid then period. Some are made from recycled glass by artisans in Ghana in processes that are really not far off from the historical methods. The large, red, monochrome beads in the center are vintage deadstock and *heavy*, being 1/2" in diameter.
The beads are strung on heavy duty beading wire and attached to silver-plated closed rings. The length including the rings only, ie, when worn as a festoon, is about 18"; including the hook to wear it as a necklace it's about 18 3/4".
The Golden Schelle is on hiatus in order to focus on finishing up our last few commissions and then completely revamp our inventory and website. We are closed to new orders at this time.
