Glittering, many-colored necklaces showing off numerous gemstones from all corners of the Empire and beyond were popular in late Roman and early Byzantine times. This particular one combines freshwater pearls, carnelian, green aventurine (a type of smaragdus to the Romans, often translated as emerald), lapis lazuli, amethyst, and brass beads. At 25 1/4" long, the particularly slender could double-wrap this and wear it as a choker, but most will wear it as a long statement necklace.
