Cochineal insects (Dactylopius coccus) are parasites on the prickly pear or nopal cactus, native to southern North America and South America, and have been used for millennia as a dyestuff. Of the natural red dyes, it is one of the most concentrated and brilliant. The dye is a bit less lightfast and washfast than madder root, about on par with the Eastern European dye insects, and superior to both types of brazil wood.
