This yarn is dyed with madder (Rubia tinctorum) root. Madder root gives different colors depending on the pH and the mordant used. Alum mordant and no pH changes yields this orange-undertoned red. This yarn is difficult to photograph, as all the fuzzies light up and refract a lot of light. It is darker than the "dark pink/light red" similar yarn listed and warmer in hue. Madder is of very ancient provenance and was in industrial use right up through the 19th century due to its very good lightfastness and washfastness; it is the beautiful ember red of antique Turkish carpets. Some are trying to revive it now as a potentially sustainable dye source alongside slow fashion ideals.
The base yarn is a crimpy, irregular handspun single. Some parts are half as thick as my wool embroidery/weaving yarns, and others are easily twice as thick as those 2 ply, 30 ends-per-inch yarns. These would be good for plying together either with itself or with the other shades. They would also make amazing rag doll hair! This is not strong enough for warp but may be ok for tapestry weft. Length is honestly unknown. Hank circumference is 48" and it weighs 3oz.
The Golden Schelle is on hiatus in order to focus on finishing up our last few commissions and then completely revamp our inventory and website. We are closed to new orders at this time.
