This batch has been dyed a lightly variegated fuchsia-purple shade with a mix of lichens, ethically and sustainably wildharvested, patiently steeped for weeks or months to produce optimal color. While these colors are not particularly fast to light or washing, their brilliance and rarity (only small quantities can be ethically produced since lichens grow so slowly) ensure that many people love lichen purples. It's a technique that has been practiced in many locations for centuries, using whatever local "orchil/archil" lichens are available to produce similar dye molecules. (This is mostly Punctelia rudecta from the Northeast US.)
These are 100 yard hanks. This 2-ply thread can be used for to work various types of embroidery (plies NOT separable as with DMC or similar!), weaving narrow goods, eg, tablet weaving, or tapestry, at approx. 30 ends per inch, and also for braiding techniques such as fingerloop or lucet, and other historical and modern fiber arts.
The Golden Schelle is on hiatus in order to focus on finishing up our last few commissions and then completely revamp our inventory and website. We are closed to new orders at this time.
