This necklace is an interpretation of a style of necklace commonly found in Roman portraits of the second century AD, but you don't need ancient garb to wear this necklace. I made myself one and wear it to work all the time! Roman jewelry is frequently timeless this way. Most green stones seemed to be referred to as "emerald" by Romans. This emerald green aventurine is possibly one of them. It is NOT the stone we modernly call emeralds!

Each hand cut cylindrical bead is between 3/8" and 5/8" long and about 1/4" wide, and resides on its own hand-wrapped link of chain. This construction method is frequently seen in later Roman and Byzantine necklaces and bracelets and is a possible method used to create the necklaces in the portraits above- compare the little gaps between the beads on these ancient ladies' necklaces with our version. Links of wire? Minute spacers?

This is one of our best sellers, remade frequently. As they are handmade, they will vary slightly from one another and the photos, but they will be recognizably the same necklace. The photos show representative samples from the dozen+ we've made. The clasp may not be the exact style shown, but it will be a gold tone hook clasp. Please contact us if that is a concern.

It is available in several lengths. Please choose your length in the drop down when ordering. If you do not see the length you desire, please contact us. We may be able to create one to length.
