Romans called any pleasingly green stone smaragdus, and valued those of a deep transparent green the most. These delicate little emerald green aventurine stones, hand cut into teardrop shapes, aren't as transparent as what we'd call emerald today, but still would have been prized for their rich color. The earrings measure a bit under 1 1/2" overall including the modern goldplated fishhook style ear wires.
