Chocolate Purple Plant Dyed Wool Thread : Wild Foraged Color

Chocolate Purple Plant Dyed Wool Thread : Wild Foraged Color
$7.00
Size

This batch has been dyed a metameric, variegated chocolate purple color with a mix of indigo and madder with alum mordant.

For centuries, if not millennia, blues from Indigofera tinctoria were the best available and prized in large swaths of the world. We've used this plant dye to create a sky blue before overdyeing with madder. Madder root (Rubia tinctorum) has been used for millennia as a dyestuff. Of the natural reds, it usually has the best lightfastness and washfastness. So, while this is not as brilliant as orchil or Tyrian purple or even cochineal-indigo purple, it will hold up far better to washing and light exposure.

This 2-ply thread can be used for to work various types of embroidery (plies NOT separable as with DMC or similar!), weaving narrow goods, eg, tablet weaving, or tapestry, at approx. 30 ends per inch, and also for braiding techniques such as fingerloop or lucet, and other historical and modern fiber arts. Please select the hank size most appropriate to your project.
