This yarn is dyed with madder (Rubia tinctorum) root. Madder root gives different colors depending on the pH and the mordant used. Alum mordant and no pH changes yields this pleasing deep brick red-- not like those new, pale bricks, but the dark, old, 19th century ones. It is darker than the madder red handspun yarn listed elsewhere. Madder is of very ancient provenance and was in industrial use right up through the 19th century due to its very good lightfastness and washfastness; it is the beautiful ember red of antique Turkish carpets. Some are trying to revive it now as a potentially sustainable dye source alongside slow fashion ideals.
